State 5 on Route 66 – Texas. We traveled through the Texas panhandle to Amarillo. Just an hour outside of Amarillo is Palo Duro Canyon, proclaimed to be the second largest canyon behind the Grand Canyon. It has a great loop road that allows you to drive through the bottom of the canyon – plenty of camping and hiking is available too.

The next morning started out sunny and beautiful, but by the time we got on the road, there was a thick blanket of fog (that continued for almost 50 miles). Our goal – Cadillac Ranch – Cadillac shells buried in a field west of town along Route 66. There’s no sign, just a small gate to announce it so we almost drove past. We walked probably a hundred yards before it began to materialize out of the fog – a little creepy.

Audience participation is encouraged, you’re welcome to bring spray paint with you to add to the installation. Unfortunately, it had rained the day before and there was a small lake around the cars so we had to forgo adding our own paint layers. But still, another iconic road stop – check.
